of Windows and nix are very different. nix style OSes use the /dev filesystem to handle (duh!) device adressing. And Windows does that very differently, even for different devices. And yes, I know there are drivers for other filesystems, but /dev is not a "real" filesystem per se, only a human readable representation of the devices.
