If it was a recall because they knew that x% of jars would prove fatal if eaten then the store should take all steps possible to contact the purchasers.

If on the other hand there is an unknown risk of some jars containing something which will not normally have any permanent effects then they acted reasonably.

So a potential risk that there are traces of salmonella they should not be required to do everything possible contact everyone. On the other hand a car manufacturer with a known design flaw in the brake system would be liable.
