in a case like this.

As in, what are the chances of someone dying from salmonella poisoning in a case like this. AFAIK salmonella poisoning is not usually fatal.

I'd say that if the chances of death were significant, then an extraordinary effort should be required. Anything less would be negligence. As a matter of fact, the local department of health should be informed, in order for hospitals to be ready for a few cases of life and death.

If the chance of death is insignificant, then no. For 'insignificant', read 'less than .5%'. But that value is subject to change, where the principle isn't.
