My system is WinXP SP2 do dah do dah.
I was getting errors with Windows Media Player, and noticed that other functionality on my box was borked. After much research, I determined that the registry permissions on th VBScript and JScript keys were fubared. So, I attempted to fix them and ended up making a mistake. Also, like a bad geek I did not back up the registry before hand nor did I create an updated Automatic System Recovery floppy.
The registry got corrupted so bad that even trying to run an executable generated an error that no program was associated with the file and that it couldn't run. AN EXECUTABLE!!!!!!!!
After I rebooted, I couldn't even get to the list of accounts to log in. So I pop in the original CD and go to recovery console. It asks me for the Administrator password. It won't accept it. My guess is that the registry was so corrupted that it couldn't read the user information. So, I try to do a repair installation. It gets to a certain point and throws an error about not being able to run regsvr32, again because no program was associated with the file. Uh-oh. Setup.exe then throws a critical error and the box reboots. When it comes back up, it restarts the setup process. Same errors, reboot, wash, rinse, repeat.
I then try to boot into safe mode. Setup cannot run in safe mode. Reboot, wash, rinse, repeat.
So, I'm off to Frys tonight to get a new UDMA-133 hard drive (I've been needing a larger one anyway). I'll slap in a blank drive, completely re-install Windows and my applications and then copy all of my data files from the old drive to the new one. Once I'm happy I have everything migrated I'll wipe the old drive and use it as additional space. I'll probably even get smart and do stuff like move user file space onto the second drive so it won't be so bad if the system borks again.
Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
