| Presentations are about selling yourself |

The overwhelming majority of business presentations have at most two objectives:
- Look at me, ain't I great?
In all circumstances I've ever known, the main point of the presentation is to impress the audience with how great the presenter is. If the audience finds the presenter interesting and impressive, the audience will want to do what the presenter wants.
- Spoon-fed information Sometimes the purpose of the presentation is to transmit a small amount of information. Obviously the purpose isn't to transmit a lot of information: if the audience wanted that (which they probably don't) then written communication is a much more effective means of transfer. No, the highly inefficient medium of the personal presentation is just a way of transmitting a few small chunks of information in a theatrical manner.
So if you do the presentation, view it as a chance to sell yourself, not to educamicate people on some catch phrase. |
