Iraq post. by hadji2007-01-25 17:31:05
The first two assume that "Iraq" has accepted by Peace_man 2007-01-25 20:35:59
the current constitution. A constitution that was created under supervision of an occupying army. They assume that Iraq is willing to 'stand up on their own' based on that constitution.

I don't think that assumption is true. I know how I personally would feel about any government based on a set of laws constrained by an invader. I would not feel that they were legitimate, and could bind me to the 'social contract'. Not that there was much national spirit in Iraq to begin with.

It is possible that some Iraqis are willing to try to make it work - just to get some measure of peace. I don't think there is any hope of there being enough to achieve any kind of success. Possibly when there are very few Iraqis who remember a time when Iraq was not under occupation there may be enough. But maybe there will always be a spark to fan for any entity willing to destabilize Iraq. I'm afraid the third option was inevitable as soon as the overthrow of Saddam's government was complete.

Possibly an honest and brutally repressive occupation might have been able to generate enough unity to form a true Iraqi government, once that occupation army had been evicted. But that is about the only scenario I see for a genuine, successful Iraq government in the foreseeable future. Any other peaceful state in Iraq can only be imposed by brute force.
