Dear UFicle, a question about virtual machines... by etwas_egal2007-01-25 01:03:03
Oh, I see what you meant. :-) by bwkaz2007-01-25 04:11:26
Lisp - some compile to a VM language, by Talchas2007-01-25 05:25:32
I like LISP, but due to its popularity I question by etwas_egal2007-01-25 13:24:52
If you stick to Common Lisp, then "probably". by bwkaz 2007-01-25 15:42:27
There used to be ten tons of different (incompatible) Lisp implementations. (Well, not entirely incompatible, but many had features that weren't present in others. Sort of like the old Unix flavors in the '70s and '80s -- all were nominally compatible, but only if you used the bare minimum of system calls, and of course you had to recompile for each one because they each ran on their own CPU type.)

Anyway, Common Lisp was supposed to help with that particular problem, though I'm not quite sure how well it did it. I know I remember reading about stuff to watch out for in various Common Lisp implementations, because the spec says certain things aren't required.

But that doesn't address your question about the number of platforms -- I don't know the answer to that. GNU has clisp, which probably compiles on just about any Unix (and probably also Cygwin). There are other Common Lisps too, which may have a different status as far as portability is concerned.
