smoking ban? discuss: by unjust2007-01-25 11:09:15
The difference is... by Arachnid 2007-01-25 12:15:57
when you sign up for any of those jobs, you're aware of the hazards, and choose to accept them. If workplace smoking is allowed, not only is it an unneccessary additional hazard, but it's not an expected risk of the job. Further, assuming a reasonable percentage of smokers, nearly every workplace will have at least one smoker, so it's not a risk you can choose to avoid by choosing a less risky job.

They enacted a similar ban here recently, and I know a lot of bar staff are very happy about not working for hours on end in a smoky, carcinogenic environment. I'm more willing to go into a bar now, too. The only disadvantage is that practically every outside table becomes a smoking area, so if you want to sit outside on a nice day, you'll more likely than not have to put up with smokers.
