And you're right. It all sounds either paranoid or fascist, or both. OTOH, we've had enough incidents where someone walks up out of that crowd and has taken potshots at one of our presidents. John Hinckley Jr., Lynnette "Squeaky" Fromme, to name a couple off the top of my head. How does security for a president decide what is or isn't a threat? And how do they defend against guys like Hinckley who didn't have a political motive or any other method for them to identify he was going to be a potential assassin? I went to a presidential rally for GWB...simply because I was able to get a pass to get in and I'd never seen a US president in person (I'm still not sure that I have ;) )...and forgot to leave my tiny Swiss Army knife at home. I had to throw it away before I was let into the rally. Like I was gonna ever be able to do serious damage to anyone with its inch-long blade. But that's what security is like. They ARE paranoid because there are a lot of people and one single target. It's really hard to protect someone in those types of situations, so they have to take a paranoid look at everything that could pose a potential threat.
