Converting VHS Tape to DVD? Advice? by asayogure 2007-01-25 11:58:26
I need to transfer my parent's old VHS home movies of the family to DVD, before they degenerate to a point where that is no longer possible.

I have an old TV Tuner card that has a standard video line-in, and my audio card has a standard audio line-in, and I have done video captures with sound before from VHS tapes, into MPEG format with sound. So I *do* know how to do it. I can then find a video format converter that will allow me to put the MPEG video into the DVD video format, and roll from there.

But we are talking like 20-30 tapes, each about 2 hours long. I know some companies are now selling specialized equipment to do this, and there are even special TV tuner/sound cards designed specifically for the process, and include the software to encode the recorded MPEG video into the DVD video format, and even do DVD menus, etc. It would also be nice to be able to do a "cut/edited" version and a full length version, as some of these tapes feature up to an hour of a kid riding their bike back and forth across the street, for no reason.

Any advice? Anyone done this project before, and have perfected a technique, and a game plan? Thanks in advance for your expertise sharing =)
