Interesting take on personal disasters by DesertRat662007-01-25 10:05:07
The late Mr. Kim... by jdelphiki 2007-01-25 11:31:59
...made quite a few obvious mistakes, not the least of which estimating that he could cut cross-country through snow heavy enough to strand his car and save having to walk extra miles along the road. Even if his car was unable to make it back down the road, it would have provided a very clear path for him to follow on his way back to civilization.

I've kinda reserved comment on his situation in deference to the ordeal the family went through and I won't presume to overjudge their situation without knowing what extents despair would have driven me to. Perhaps being in Scouts as a lad gave me a level of understanding of what to do, being lost or stranded in the wilderness that other folks might not have.

But they *did* make a lot of mistakes that run against common sense.

I definitely would have had more creative ideas about how to keep the family warm than burning the tires on the car...there was LOTS of trees around. Also, I wouldn't be driving in the winter mountains during a snowstorm without having heavy winter gear in the car, for myself and for my family. I would not have opted for a shortcut...regardless of what the map showed...in order to save time. Having gotten myself to where I couldn't go forward on the mountain side road, I would not have risked putting my car in the ditch trying to turn around if such a turn looked to perilous. And so on, and so on...

I'm still being too hard on them, I reckon. As we often see, their predicament was the result of a chain of events...one decision leading to another, all of which left the Kim family unprepared for where they ended up. OTOH, I know that I would have, at least, tried to anticipate some of what I might have encountered on that trip.
