I would, however, happily patronize a smoke-free resturaunt or bar. If there is a legitimate market for a completely non-smoking establishment, that market will be filled. Remember there is no current law which forces a bar owner to permit smoking.
As a case in point, Carnival Cruise Lines used to have a ship (the Paradise) that was completely non-smoking. They abandoned this practice several years ago, as the ship was dead last in the industry in onboard revenue per passenger. It seems that non-smokers also drank and gambled less and went to bed earlier.
Thus in some businesses, it may actually be desireable from a profit perspective to attract smokers at the expense of alienating non-smoking cuetomers. |
