The California State University school system, in which I am enrolled, requires that every student prior to graduation take a Writting Proficiency Exam. Yes, with capital letters. This test consists of being shut in a room with a pen, paper, optional dictionary and a prompt. 90 minutes are alloted to respond to the prompt. I took the exam this morning, and received the prompt: In his last budget recomendation, Governor Arnold Schwazziquxegger (sp?) proposed a 10% fee increase for CSU students." We had to argue for or against the fee increase.
Personally, I thought this was in idiot test. Write a couple paragraphs showing that you can write a couple paragraphs. Without that ability I never would have passed my history classes, or english, or econ, or poli sci, or soc. et al. What alarmed me was the number of people taking the test for the second third or fourth time because they kept failing. You cannot even sign up for the test untill you have completed a certain level of english language courses which cannot be tested out of.
I didn't really mind takin the test. I am glad the CSU requires such and exam. I don't think people should get a BA without being able to write a coherent paragraph or three. Basic communication skills are essential. |
