How long was he planning his hunting trip to last? What you quoted seems to be a bit misleading. If he survived on provisions that he carried in case of emergencies, was he not carrying any provisions that were for the hunting trip? It seems to be an apples to oranges comparison, but I can't access the story to see the details for myself.

I seriously doubt this guy would have lasted as long as he did if he wasn't going on the hunting trip.
