I agree with you completely.

But the First Amendment doesn't cover making threats to the lives of elected officials. Like I said, we both know that you're not, but when it comes to that kind of thing, the Secret Service tends to err on the side of extreme caution.

Something similar to talking about bombs or hijacking on an airplane. They don't offer you a lot of First Amendment protection for making such statements, regardless of your intent. Or in many cases, regardless of how absurd and unrealistic the statement might be.
