Most lab breeding is very intentional (particularly amongst plants). They breed mice with certain characteristics (often BAD adaptations) for experiments, or they breed plants with characteristics which may or may not be survival-enhancing (most of them are, AFAIK, but I don't have proof).

That's the kind of lab breeding mentioned, I'm certain.
