Is science based in fact or belief? by subbywan2007-01-22 16:28:58
Science is based on belief supported by fact. by hadji2007-01-22 16:35:24
but could it be the reason it's faith-based by subbywan2007-01-22 16:36:58
      Can't ever get there. by vetitice2007-01-22 16:41:07
Why can't we ever get there? by subbywan2007-01-22 16:44:37
Because you can always say by vetitice2007-01-22 16:50:05
            Not yet, I agree by subbywan2007-01-22 16:53:07

                That's the catch. by subbywan2007-01-22 17:04:23
But we know exactly how we'd go about that. by Arachnid2007-01-22 17:06:15
Only because we've *done* it. by subbywan2007-01-22 17:10:03

Yes. But we don't know how to get them back by subbywan2007-01-22 17:29:46

Are we omnipotent? by subbywan 2007-01-22 17:53:51
We can create life. We've been able to do so for centuries, cultivating bacteria and such. we've been able to splice genetic traits for ages as well, as evidenced with the bean monk.

Over the years, we've refined that to the point where instead of splicing plants together, we can pop in to the DNA and crudely hack that apart or together as we want. We're able to create clones of animals without any sex involved whatsoever.

in 100 years, or 1000, or 10 000, we're going to progress more and more and be able to do things that to us currently seem like omnipotence.

For a good portion of that, we will still have to play within our own confines though. If I went back 10 000 years with a gun and a pocket lighter, I'm pretty sure I could convince the natives I was a god. The more stuff I could use, the more omnipotent I'd seem. Some of it would be basic -- creating fire at will. Others may seem like i'm fiddling with nature itself (like giving my enemy blankets infected with smallpox and telling everyone I destroyed them because they wouldn't worship me). I could plant explosives and divert a river from the next valley over, proving I have mastery over the very earth itself.

Yet to my contemporaries NONE of this makes me special in any way. It's merely a question of resources and tech.

Consider just who came up with the ideas of omnipotence and the other omni's? A satellite taking pics and relayingn that to me via an earbud and small screen would certainly make it seem like I was "all seeing" 2000 years ago.

A C130 deploying it's payload over Soddom and Gammorah would sure as apples convince the people looking up into the night sky the Angel of Death was upon them.

Our ideas of God and omnipotence are based on assumptionsn we have, that while we accept as beingn true, we are getting closer and closer each day to being able to reproduce ourselves.

So you can disprove small gods. Woohoo. by vetitice2007-01-22 18:04:10
