There is general agreement as to the definition of conjecture, hypothesis and theory, but the word "law" has throughout history been used for a very wide variety of applications. For instance, Hooke's law is nothing more than a linear approximation of the response of a spring (or whatever) to an external applied force. I had one physics prof who felt that the use of the word in physics was so nonstandard as to be misleading. It's almost synonymous with "statement".
