In praise of evil 4WD SUVs by Havoc2007-01-22 05:47:43

Heavy vehicles... by jdelphiki 2007-01-22 12:30:39
Interesting that you bring this up. We've driven the 'big' minivans (Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Grand Caravan) for years and have always marveled at how well they handle.

Once it tried to slide out while driving through several inches of slush (an example of the FWD problem I cited in my earlier post), and it took only one and a half correction twists of the steering wheel to bring it back into control. Another time, on a solid sheet of ice, a strong crosswind started us sliding a bit sideways. That time, it took only two correction twists to the steering wheel. One other time, the lady in front of me stopped on a green light during a heavy rain and I had to move into the empty turn lane in order to slide to a stop without hitting her.

In all cases, particularly the last, I found that those were the only situations where I, as the driver, could truly feel how heavy those vehicles were. Chrysler makes 'em run nice and smooth...at least to the perspective that you don't really notice their weight until you're trying to get them to behave in extreme circumstances.

Hard to say how I might've fared with a FWD in the scenario you described, but my last example sounds similar and I was able to change lanes with our van AND get it stopped (only slightly into the intersection) without too much trouble (other than a LOT of cursing at the oblivious lady who couldn't seem to understand that "green means GO!").

The difference might still come down to what the driver's used to. Or it might come down to something as innocuous as certain vehicle models/styles being better/worse than others.
