...the balance of the force applied to each set of wheels (or to each wheel) would have to be equal at all times for a 4WD and that balance may or may not always be achievable, especially given the weight differential between front and back.

If the back wheels are driven faster than the front due to road conditions or whatever, even for a brief moment, spinout can occur. By comparison, on a front wheel drive vehicle, the back wheels are being dragged along and won't have that problem.

At least, that's what my feeble intuition suggests to me. ;)
