In praise of evil 4WD SUVs by Havoc2007-01-22 05:47:43

4WD may be safer than 2WD but by AndyA 2007-01-22 09:45:51
a 4WD with a driver who thinks "I can drive normally on snow, I've got 4WD" is no where near as safe as a 2WD with a driver who is careful.

Every time I go up to Tahoe in the winter I see a lot of 4WD SUVs and trucks in trouble. These are drivers who aren't used to snow and think that 4WD is a magic bullet. You see them doing 40-50 on snow covered narrow mountain roads with a cliff on one side. I wouldn't do that speed on those roads under perfect conditions.

So for equal skill drivers 4WD is better, the danger is if it gives a false sense of security and the driver is over confident.

Personally I'm considering a 4WD for my next car for exactly this reason. I don't drive on snow or ice very often and so I'm out of practice at it. The couple of times a year that I do it's on nasty roads that I don't know. For that reason I would like the little bit extra safety margin that 4WD gives you.
But a car not an SUV, I want something which can go around corners ;-)
