In praise of evil 4WD SUVs by Havoc2007-01-22 05:47:43
I drove 4 hours yesterday and saw ~12 cars off by nedludd 2007-01-22 07:04:37
>1/2 were pickup trucks or SUVs. Mind you this is a stonger indication of driver ability than it is of any flaws in 4wds. Some people seem to think 4wd == invincibility. For example, on a 6 lane freeway, 3 lanes each way, the left lane usually gets filled up with slush because it gets less traffic and less frequent clearing. When that's the case, I avoid it as a matter of principle, if you need to pass somebody, you're probably not going to be able to safely increase your speed with that on the road. Yesterday, traffic in the right 2 lanes was flowing at about regular freeway speed of 60-65 mph. Somebody in an Explorer Sport-Trac (the one with a short pick-up bed) didn't think that was fast enough, and went tear-assing up the left lane in the slush. He didn't go off, but it wasn't a particularly smart thing to do either.

Now I won't dispute that 4wd can be of great help when you're somewhere pretty hilly. It can get you going and help keep you going at low speed, but you shouldn't be travelling any faster than anybody who is sucessfully driving a 2wd vehicle, as the turning and stopping limitations are still in effect. I do a fair amount of driving in snow, and I would consider myself to be pretty proficient at it. I've never gone off, nor have I ever been stuck. I drive a 2wd car with a manual transmission, and there have been times when I've had to circumvent a hill because I couldn't get up it, but I've never slid down it backwards uncontrollably either.

From what I've heard, if you're going over ~30mph, by Arman X2007-01-22 07:44:35
