It's a Saturn Vue, front-wheel-drive, 4-cylinder, it gets roughly 29-31 mpg in town, and just a touch under 36 on the highway.
We use it to haul the Newfoundlands and other children (and grandchildren) around, plus my wife drives it the 25 miles each way to her school (she teaches third grade in a rural elementary school). The last six or seven miles of the road to her school are in the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, very winding and hilly and beautiful. The Vue is fairly highly rated for safety, and we got the side air bag options and all the other safety stuff when we bought the thing.
That entire 25-mile trip is known locally as "white-tail alley," there are several deer collisions -per day- during the rutting season. I want to use as little fuel as possible getting her there, but between the critters on the bad roads, and the critters we have to haul around, an SUV actually made sense for us. (I just made sure we got the safest and most efficient one we could.)
The old Nissan pickup hauls me to work, and loads of wood, rocks, monitors (still got two Sun monsters in the back, and no takers....), and farm equipment and supplies. It's an ugly old rust-bucket, built in 1990; this spring it will be getting some much-needed work done - brakes, probably a new clutch, and a couple of swaybar bushings. Ought to drive like new after that, it only has a bit under two hundred thousand miles on the ticker. Should last most of another decade, I suspect.
