I disagree. I can drive my beat-up old Nissan rear-wheel-drive pickup truck in pretty much any conditions, because I know how to drive. (27+ mpg, by the way, when not loaded with rocks or wood or the like. Old and ugly, yes, but it is fairly efficient...)
Most of the snow and ice accidents around here seem to be idiot-related, rather than vehicle-related. "I gots me this-hyar four-wheel monster, I can do anythin' I want! Yee-haa!" As they slide off the road and into the ditch.
I drive past all sorts of 4-wd morons every time there is a weather event. Lowering speed, knowing how to steer on slippery roads, knowing how to use the engine as a brake, and how to use the brakes properly on ice, using some freaking common sense when the roads are bad, those things make a lot more difference than having two more wheels pulling.
