A statement like that really scares me. The concept of the social contract is the very basis for our entire governmental and legal system. There are three principle treatises on the subject: the most primitive by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the next by John Locke, and the most complete in the Leviathan by Hobbs. You should read these to gain a basic understanding of your rights in a society.

The short explanation is that you agree to have your rights limited by a sovereign power for benefits of mutual gain, security, etc. Ultimately, you are the person who makes the choice of whether or not you will abide by any given societies laws. Another great book everybody should read is Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau
