I couldn't get my 300 baud acoustic coupler (on my Apple II+) to work thru the grungy party line we had had for phone service at that particular point in history. Even if it had worked, every BBS that I had a number for was a long distance call (and back then LD was considerably more than $0.06/min) and would have put me into serious debt in a hurry. </old_phart_rant>
