only it was school leaving exams here. I was a university external tutor once, so the positive responses bring back memories. However, put in that kind of exam question here and you would fail. And no, I have never taken the length of an exam to mark one paper ... 10-20 mins at the most. Anything longer is counter productive. Do US universities not offer remedial teaching so the students can pick up on skills they didnt get at school? They are offered by the Guild at UWA. After all, it is not only language majors who have to be able to write presentably. Getting engineering students to put two correctly spelt words together in the appropriate context is a real challenge.
