matter, but in this case he took an blank cheque in order to allow someone to avoid the bank's waiting period. This period is used to avoid bouncing cheques being cashed. The bank knows (and your friend is finding out) that once you've paid out cash, it's very difficult to get it back.

Also (in theory), it is not legal to fill in your own name on any cheque - the whole process of writing a cheque has to be done by the person paying the money - thereby making it their responsibility to ensure the cash is in the account and the correct amount is going to the correct person. Your friend effectively bought a blank cheque and filled in his own name - which the bank should refuse to cash (again - in theory) regardless of intention or reason. The theory rarely holds out these days.
