Maybe a bit altruistic. The one who's doing it is in a generous position, but it doesn't mean he's in charge or dominating. Usually I'd expect a man in this position, and the "taker" position would be a woman, but I can think of switched positions, and even two women or two men, although it then would shift the "giver" into a more advanced age and the "taker" into a younger one.
Nevertheless it's an altruistic and romantic gesture and shows deep respect or love.
