But as far as I could read before Safari go poof, the person doing the proposing is a police officer, and what he's proposing is a centralized database with *all* the profiles in it, to be searchable against anything found in roughly the same county as a crime scene. That's very different from records held by private individuals and obtainable only by warrant.

If individuals *want* to have some of their DNA on record, in case they go missing and somebody needs to identify a charred body, they can yank out a few hairs and put them in their safety deposit box or something. Police not invited, thankyouverymuch, until and unless the need arises.
