...of your point.
The government would be holding your weapon for you against the possibility that you might misuse it.
Okay, I know the analogy falls apart there...guns probably aren't the best comparison in this case because they represent a weapon, where as DNA represents an identity.
My biggest beef with the whole DNA-storing concept is that it precludes us the freedom from choosing whether or not we want to commit a crime.
Freedom to commit a crime, you ask? Is he serious?
Actually, I am. I do not trust our government...or ANY government...to create laws that always have my liberty or best interests in mind. Who's to say that at some point, the government won't create laws that so patently infringe on my freedoms that I feel my only hope is civil disobedience? I would not want such a government to be able to track me down simply because it's hedged my liberty (by holding my DNA) against such an occasion.
Also, there's this: who's to say that the government won't misuse the DNA it collects from its citizens? Discrimination? Eugenics? Cloning? Once such info is safely in the hands of the government, how do I stop them? How do I get it back?
I do agree that all of this is speculation on how the government can go bad and that most likely, these things would never happen. Also, I recognize that the potential for people to do criminal things that affect the lives of others is the other side of that coin...a side allowed by my resistance to DNA-profiling by the government.
But of the two sides of that coin, I personally will always choose the side that provides me with the greatest liberty and leaves the greatest part of our lives out of the hands of the government. |
