letting the pump run when there is nothing but foam to move can let it overheat. The best way to clear it it fabric softener. Put some (a capfull) into the dishwasher, start it up. After it "fills' and starts cycling, stop it, and set it to drain. Repeat several times until the water isn't foamy when you stop it.
