Seeing as I live in UFieville (25 mins from Illiad's place, or so).
Have been to Virginia once, 25 years ago. Most memorable bit of that trip (riding on the back of my brother's motorcycle) was either in Virginia or West Virginia (I think it was the latter).
Pulled into campground for the night, got up in the morning, hungry. We hopped on the bike and headed out. Oh, look! There's a gas station and some guys hanging out outside, let's ask them for directions.
<us... pull up to the guys hanging around their pickup truck>
Brother: Do any of you boys know where we can find a restaurant ['find a restaurant' is paraphrased, can't recall those words. My brain had farted after the first five words.]
Them: <looked at us> <pregnant pause> <looked at motorcycle license I think> <gave directions>
Brother: Thanks!
Me: <after we had pulled out: asked brother if he happened to notice that the fellows were black>
Him: [oh crap!]
In other words... yes, we were from Ontario, and yes, I think that had something to do with the fellows realizing that 'boys' might not necessarily have certain negative connotations :-) |
