because our real names either change relatively frequently, or they are the same as someone else's. I use the same nick everywhere that I can online. Someone really determined can find out a lot about me via online sources, because I wanted to be able to be found by old friends and such. Also, being in the SCA or SF Fandom, it became "natural" to use a pseudonym, since you often do so in those groups.
