They found that not all cells in the tumor where equal, with some of them being the 'root'.
If these root- cells where in fact stem cells or adult cells (before the tumor started) wasn't mentioned in the abstract.

Number have a lot to do with everything. Let's assume that 1% of all cells are (non tumerous) stem cells, the rest are growth capable cells, but not stem cells.
Now if it matters how "much more likely" a mutation in a stem cell is to produce cancerous cells. If it is 10x as likely most of the cancer will still be produced form adult cells. If it is 1000x as likely the stem cells will matter.

So while it's possible that mutated stem cells cause cancer it's also possible that they aren't. At least untily some more research is done.
