I'm taking a course in radiation biochemistry. To sum up, radiation induced cell damage results from damage to DNA. Especially important are events in which both strands of the helix are broken within ten base pairs (or so) of each other. The body is miraculously efficient at repairing these insults, but the odd one gets by and causes trouble. (The death of an individual cell is unimportant actually - it's the one that remains viable and able to reproduce but is altered in certain unfortunate ways that results in tumour formation.)
