just not an insurmountable one. The deep burial schemes that have been proposed (and researched to death) are quite viable. The main problem is that opponents to _any_ kind of disposal have been reading too much science fiction and not enough science history. For instance, we have known about the nucleus for less than a century (Rutherford, 1911) and have since gone on to learn much not only about its structure, but the structures of its main components. However, rather than treating nuclear waste as a future resource, opponents assume that we will learn nothing more about radioactivity , nuclear stability, etc for the next few millenia, during which time the waste will have to be guarded against the sort of scenarios that are only taken seriously by the writers of bad Hollywood science fiction movies.
I could rant on, but ... |
