With all the flack that Bill Cosby got, one thing to keep in mind is that from his point of view, he is a successful role model urging his peer group understand the mindset of success. For all the flack that he got for saying what he said, imagine how much worse it would have been for Tom Cruise or Woody Harrelson to have said the same thing about the same group of people.
Assuming you are dealing with rational people, tell them that you want to see young people improve themselves. You want to see them get an education and exhibit self-respect and self-confidence. That is the whole point of your statement. Then ask them how that's racist.
Of course, the obvious answer would be that you're assuming they are NOT improving themselves, that they are NOT exhibiting self-respect and that they are NOT getting educated. And if you're only targetting African Americans in those assumptions, then you would have to defend those assumptions for that demographic. I'm not sure how you would do that. |
