For a non-lethal weapon, like a taser, to be effective, it has to be quite unpleasant, and dance on the line of permanent damage to the target. However, because it's not lethal, cops will show disproportionately less restraint in their use.
Basically the logic is, I'm not shooting him with a gun so I can do whatever I feel like. This is obviously very wrong, caused by the collision of the false perception that tasers are completely safe with poor training on when their use is appropriate.
The most reprehensible thing I found about this incident was that the cops in question refused to reveal their badge number and threatened to taser onlookers who started taking pictures. That makes it seem to me like they knew what that what they were doing was wrong. |
