Some will have enough backup for days.

When Hurricane Charlie hit Florida a few years ago, a large area was without any electrical service for weeks. The cell towers were still working after the PSTN failed, so calls would not go through even though the cellphones had signal. But the cellco's network was still working where the PSTN was not involved.

Despite not having power, clean water, or (in many cases) a roof, people still had wireless internet access on their BlackBerries.
