Every once in a while, something reminds me of this. When I was in college, I knew someone who asked me if all the constellations we see in the sky were in our solar system. I've also met adults who don't know the difference between a planet and a star. For people who have lived and grown in a first-world country, this sort of thing is unfathomable to me. And while I can't recite any specific examples, I have a general recollection of having met people who neither know the difference between a galaxy and the universe.
Are these people freaks for not knowing these things? Am I a freak for thinking these things should be basic, common knowledge in a country like the U.S.? |
