| All the while ignoring that one of the major reasons Rangel gives for this is that it would possibly prevent wars like the one in Iraq, of which you've been an ardent proponent. Despite this being mentioned in at least 2 posts.
And then, when flaws and problems with this is pointed out, it's turn-around time: Look who's proposing this, A Democrat!! Followed by a reference to a policy that's not really working and some people don't like, and a standard talking point about the Democratic Party.
Excuse me while I go barf in the corner at the partisanship evident here.
Here's my opinion on the idea. I don't like it. Neither in principle or with respect to the reason given above. In principle, because I'm rather fond of this whole individual liberty thing. In fact, I'd argue that control of your own body and your own self is the most basic right of a person. Not letting that go to any government, no matter how legitimate.
As for the preventing unnecessary war reason: Much as I'm against the current idiocy in Iraq, there's also necessary uses of military force that this might hamper. The good way to prevent bad use of such is simple: Elect good leadership, along with making your voice heard to those on positions of responsibility. And that's what happened 2 weeks ago, and should happen again in 2 years. And then on (you may now call me a naive idealist). |
