Young people do not vote much here. The perception is that the seniors have it all sewn up; they have the time and the numbers to catch the ear of government.

Let's say that a massive voter awareness program got the youth out in droves to vote against this. Let's say the increased political activity persisted a bit. There are many who do not WANT young people to vote. That would mean having to better fund colleges and financial aid programs, or better address programs for the working poor.

We don't want that now, do we? It'll cut into the entitlement spending for old folks and industry! Or, as another poster mentioned, you'll get the angle that "I served my country, now give me benefits!" It would take massive amounts of money for the training and the perks that would be voted in. "Transition to civilian life" alone...

I don't appreciate the US being the world's babysitter. I still think it's necessary for intervention in certain circumstances...but remember that if the US turns more isolationist because of this, it means that we might not come out to help even if asked. We might make the full 180 from "help unasked" to "screw you, handle it yourselves."
