It was definitely a "chick" book by voxwoman 2006-11-20 09:06:07
My mom used to write Regency Romance novels, and I was her first reader... so I picked up a lot of the romance genre cliches. I handed her a McCaffery, once, and she read about a chapter and declared it "a romance!"

So, I've decided that McCaffery is in the SF Romance sub-subgenre. :)

And I enjoyed Ship Who Sang and the sequel (or 2) to it. *Because* it was a romance novel, and I was in the mood for it.

I don't know that McCaffery is overrated, however (back to the TLP in that thread). The Pern books, at least the first dozen or so, were quite excellent. You can't blame an author for milking a "franchise" for all it's worth - they have to eat, too. And as long as the books are selling, a writer that wants to stay in business will keep writing them.
