that it has negative connotations now. The Draft as most people see it is being forced to bow to the will of the government and not to serve their country because of Korea and Vietnam.
If they did put in what I would refer to as a "compulsory service" to the U.S. govt. then they would have to seriously overhaul the focus of the military training program and that would be a MAJOR undertaking with the volume of people that would be going through it. Think aobut it, 300,000,000 people in the U.S. and how many of them fall into the draft/compulsory service catagory... There is no way that the current training facilities could handle it and it would also be seen by the rest of the world as a VERY agressive move with the # of people the U.S. has and the trained military force it could field.
I have no issue with compulsory military training and service as long as the system can not be taken advantage of and is not for an extended time period. I think it would have a good effect in many wasy but also some negatives in others. I have a feeling that it would help eliminate the sense of entitlement that man people in the U.S. have in some ways but the drawbacks could also be fairly severe as well.
I have a feeling that shades of the Roman empire would appear where senators/rich people are buying off their son's military service, buying commissions in the military, or are breaking/cutting off their thumbs to keep them from being forced into service. Heinelin's Starship troopers, where only those with military service are allowed to vote?
I view the re-enstatement of the draft as a VERY sharp double edged sword and not a smart move with the political climate in the world at this time. One small mis-step and it could backfire badly both economically and socially. |
