What kitchen equipment and supplies are essential? by Phoon2006-11-20 01:18:14
A good set of knives by mridenour2006-11-20 05:30:49
    Don't get a set! by hyzenthlay 2006-11-20 05:49:03
YOu probably won't ever need all the sizes in a set, though you should spring for a decent knife. Calphlon makes a decent knife for a relativly low price.

You will need one large knife for 80% of your cutting. Hubby uses a 9 inch chef knife I prefer a 7 inch santuko. We need a large bread knife, and I also use a small paring knife. That is about all we ever use.

I keep several cheap steack knives and some kitchen shears as well, so I am never tempted to use the good knife to open pakcages, etc :)
