What kitchen equipment and supplies are essential? by Phoon 2006-11-20 01:18:14
This house came with quite a few utensils, pots and pans, and miscellaneous items. However, Dad's been throwing things away simply because he sees them as 'clutter'; as he doesn't cook, he doesn't see the purpose of having more than a single pot. Lately I haven't been able to make anything more complicated than macaroni and cheese because we simply don't have the equipment necessary.

[A side note: Dad seems to have some fear of following recipes or measuring ingredients. He won't make ramen the proper way, because it would require him to measure water; instead, he drains it. (And adds mayonnaise. Ew.) You can't imagine how many fights we've had over my insistence on actually waiting for the water to boil before adding the macaroni and starting the timer; he complains that I'm too picky, but who wants to eat soggy macaroni? It's not that he can't cook things, it's that he actively refuses to follow any instructions more complicated than "empty package into pan, add water, heat".]

I actually bought a 12" covered saute pan and a 1 quart sauce pan for my own use. We still have most of the utensils that came with the house (except for a few that melted or broke). But we still have nothing like a suitable kitchen setup.

If you were to keep a basically stocked kitchen, what would you use? For instance, which sizes of pots and pans would you need access to? Which spices would you need? Which utensils are indispensable?
