That caterpillar is somewhat poisonous. All the ones with little fake legs *and* spines are. I don't know for sure what species that one is, but I believe it may be a sub-species of the Australian Swallowtail, which includes notably the Orchard Butterfly (sorta medium-big, fairly common. Especially around grapes....), the Monarch Butterfly (slightly bigger, not so common), and the Ulysses Butterfly (electric blue, huge - between 4 and 7 inches, and not found particularly far south of Cairns -- It's definitely not one of these, however much I may hope). |
