You don't need much to be a fileserver, a P4 would be way overkill hell, the Athlon 750 in my linux box is somewhat overkill for the job. Won't need much ram either if you aren't running X. like 256Meg (and that's somewhat overkill. truthfully if it's only going to be a fileserver you'll only need 64Meg) something around 1Ghz will leave some wiggle room for future ideas for the box. (webserver anyone?)
