Simple fact is that .doc is a closed format and always has been. Every application that even attempts to read it without M$'s help has had to reverse engineer their implementation. M$ does not want anybody to be able to read or write to their format without using their software.

Adobe has tried that with PDF over the years as well.

End of the day, when I *need* to be compatable to do business with somebody...
